Summary
Sponsorships are donations from a business or individual that support your fundraising in exchange for recognition or promotional benefits. Sponsorships are secured by participants and are different from employer matching gifts.
Important: Because sponsorships include recognition or promotional value, tax and receipt considerations differ from personal donations. Sponsors should consult their tax advisor for guidance.
What is a sponsorship?
A sponsorship is financial support from an organization or individual that comes with recognition and/or activation opportunities, based on the level of giving.
Common examples include:
-
Sponsor logos displayed on participant signage
-
Sponsor logos printed on event t‑shirts
-
A paid advertisement in an event program
Recognition options vary by event and sponsorship level. Not all events offer the same opportunities.
Who can sponsor a participant or team?
Sponsorships may come from:
-
Local or national businesses
-
Community organizations
-
Individuals who choose recognition in exchange for their gift
Sponsors are typically secured by participants or teams, rather than assigned by Blood Cancer United.
How are sponsorships different from other donations?
-
Standard individual donations – Individual donations do not include public recognition or promotional benefits.
Important: Sponsorships and employer matching gifts are separate fundraising methods. A company sponsorship does not automatically qualify as a matching gift. Company sponsorships cannot have a matching gift per IRS guidelines.
When sponsorships are a good option?
Sponsorships can be a strong fit when:
-
A participant has a strong business or community network
-
A company is looking for visibility at an event
-
A team is fundraising together and offering shared recognition
What to expect after securing a sponsor
Once a sponsorship is confirmed:
-
The gift is credited to the participant or team, based on event rules
-
Recognition is fulfilled according to the agreed‑upon sponsorship level
-
Timing of recognition (such as signage, apparel, or programs) depends on event production deadlines
