Summary
When a donor submits a matching gift request, a matching gift promise may appear in your Fundraising Tools and count toward your fundraising total before the matching gift is received.
IMPORTANT: Not all campaigns support matching gift promises.
How matching gift promises appear in your fundraising total
Matching gift promises reflect when Blood Cancer United is notified that a donor has submitted a matching gift request. In some cases, notification may be delayed or may not occur automatically, depending on the employer's program.
In many cases, the donor lets Blood Cancer United know that the matching gift request has been submitted. Participants or Blood Cancer United staff may also submit the notification form on the donor’s behalf to help ensure matching gift credit is applied.
IMPORTANT: Submitting this form does not initiate a matching gift with the employer and does not replace the donor’s submission through their employer’s matching gift program.
Once Blood Cancer United is notified:
- The matching gift may be recorded as promised
- The promise appears in your Fundraising Tools, often within 24 hours
- The promise counts toward your fundraising total
- The promise is visible on the Promises tab in Fundraising Tools
- The promise total is included on your fundraising webpage
When a matching gift promise is created
The timing of a matching gift promise can vary.
In most cases:
- A promise appears within 1 day to 2 weeks after the donor submits the matching gift request
- Timing depends on when Blood Cancer United is notified and whether additional confirmation is needed
If you believe a matching gift promise is missing:
- Email matchinggifts@lls.org
- Include the donor’s name, donation date, donation amount, and company name
What happens when the matching gift is received
When the employer sends the matching gift:
- The donation appears on the Donations tab in Fundraising Tools
- The donation appears on your fundraising webpage
- If a matching gift promise exists, it is replaced by the actual donation
Can a matching gift be applied to a different event?
No.
Per IRS guidelines, matching gifts can only be applied to the event associated with the original donation.
